Unlocking Can Get You Locked Up

I ran across a very interesting tweet from @SoloPracticeU today. Apparently, it is illegal for a person to unlock (which is different from jailbreak) his/her phone. A first time offense can lead to a fine of up to $500,000, five years imprisonment, or both. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $1,000,000, up to 10 years imprisonment, or both. Now there are some exceptions…like if you own the copyrights of the software on the phone or if you buy the phone for the non-contract price.

I am not sure how often this rule will be enforced. It may be like the Napster issue where millions did it and only a few were prosecuted. I will have to follow this issue and see how it plays out. What do y’all think?
